ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

9 Investigates uncovered animals dying or in need of intense care after surgeries residents paid for at Orange County Animal Services.

In the last two months, Channel 9 learned two dogs died after being spayed, and a third is still receiving treatment after what some are calling a ‘botched’ operation.

Life Saving Surgery on botched OCAS Spay for Mama Bravo

Mama Bravo was a pregnant dog on death row at Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Fl. Happy Trails Animal Rescue saved her from death row on December 16, 2013. She went into labor four hours later, and delivered seven strong, healthy puppies the next day. Mama was a wonderful Mommy, and cared for and nursed all of her puppies despite her emaciated condition. She was returned to Orange County Animal Services on Wednesday February 5, 2014 to receive a routine spay procedure in preperation to go to her forever Mommy. Her new Mommy called us last night saying that Mama was having complications from her spay procedure and was very week and could not stand. Upon returning her to OCAS, we did not receive any definitive answers from their vet as to what was causing the complications. We took her in to our own vet for further diagnosis, and it was discovered she had severe internal bleeding due to surgical complications from her spay. She had only 10% blood volume remaining from internal bleeding, and needed a blood transfusion and a life saving operation to repair the problems involved in the spay. The bladder had been tied off during the spay procedure and was left.
